A little expansion on Ex

I wrote a post with some details about my most recent relationship. It ended two years ago this May, but how can something really end when there’s no closure? Or, there NEVER will be closure.

Maybe I’ll find some by sharing some of my journey. I never did because I didn’t want/don’t want to villainize anyone. Break ups happen. First loves don’t work out. Life is messy.

But it’s such a H-U-G-E part of me and my life that it feels like a secret–one I don’t want to keep anymore. You guys (*waves at first, early readers*) have been reading my books since TAKE THE REINS came onto the scene in May 2009. That’s seven years! SEVEN! I was in a relationship with Ex for almost that entire time–it was this part of my life that few know about it. It’s not something I want to duck and cover from anymore. I’m living with a LOT of secrets–some that I’ve made public and others are private–and all I want is to get this off my chest. To move on.

I started seeing someone in November 2009 and was head over heels in love before I could blink. So was Ex. I’d made the move to NYC to escape some things, live in a big city, and to be closer to Ex.

Romance wasn’t something we sought out or meant to happen–it just did. I stood in the garden late one night and asked if I could kiss Ex. We were at our favorite after work bar and Ex had just gotten back to Brooklyn from another day in publishing. Ex said yes and that was that. If we had been inseparable before, we were crazy inseparable now.

I rode the F train 45 minutes almost every day to Ex’s publishing house to have lunch and we would ride home together. Sometimes to my place, sometimes to Ex’s. If we weren’t together, we were G-chatting, BlackBerry messaging or on the phone. I couldn’t see Ex enough and it was very true that at the time, Ex felt the same.

But since this is obviously a break up story, Ex’s feelings changed . . .

And, with that, I want to spill another secret: I’m fictionalizing the story for a new YA! It has been good therapy to write it and I can’t wait to share it with you. #nomoresecrets ❤

Kate wrote this post and I wanted to share it with all of you! Find the original post here. 🙂

VIOLET AND RUBY, BFFS 4-EVER!

So, this website is the first visible evidence of me and my best friend going into business together. It’s like a childhood dream, owning a company with your BFF. But as you grow up, it seems like a really, really bad idea. You think about the fights you might get in—over money, who gets to make all the decisions, who is better at doing whatever and who is jealous and why. You worry someone might get hurt and, ultimately, you worry that you’ll ruin your friendship.

But you know what? I’ve never had that worry about Violet & Ruby. And there are two reasons why.
One: I never knew the true meaning of “best friend” until I met mine a few years ago. Sure, I’d had friends I’d worn friendship bracelets with, or made BFF friendship notebooks with—notebooks that declared “best friends forever!” But this girl, she means so much more to me than a bracelet or a notebook. When we hang out, I never get bored or annoyed with her and wonder when she’ll leave or when I can go home. I can spend all day and night with her and call her when she gets home and still have a marathon phone call with her. We finish each others’ sentences, love the same things, own many of the same items of clothing, and get asked almost everywhere we go if we’re sisters.
Two: I met my bestie DOING business. We were in business together first, and became best friends later. We were partnered together, long distance, as author and editor on a series called CANTERWOOD CREST. We started talking on the phone once in a while about things non-Canterwood-related. But then something life-changing happened. I learned I was going to have to get a spinal fusion surgery. Even though I’m an adult, the idea of surgery on my back terrified me! I told my friend over the phone, who also happened to have had that same surgery—and she was amazing. Even though she was nervous for me, she talked to me all about her experience and made me feel so much better and like everything was going to be all right.
During the time I was out of work to recover from surgery (two months!), and even though one of us lived in Brooklyn and one in Florida, we talked every day for at least a couple hours a day. We planned the time in advance, both made tea before our calls, and spent hours talking and laughing and telling each other things about ourselves that we’d never told anyone else. Eventually, we visited each other and decided we couldn’t live so far apart. Just three months later, we were both living in the same exact neighborhood in Brooklyn!
We decided to start Violet & Ruby one night when we were painting our nails. We have a ton of beauty rituals that we do together all the time—facemasks, mani/pedis, online lip-gloss shopping, and slew of shared accessories. We started talking about how cool it would be if we made a blog where we posted about all of our favorite things: fave glosses, makeup, nail polish, TV shows, books, etc.
We agreed on the blog . . . and then Violet & Ruby became Violet & Ruby Productions. The latter still included the sparkly website, but it also included something just as cool: a packaging company partnership that consisted of just the two of us. We’d brainstorm the way we always did for Canterwood—but we’d brainstorm ideas for other books and novellas and then we’d write them together! A few months later, here we are. Our first real project, with an e-novella close to being published! And you know what? Every day has been so much fun. We don’t fight, we haven’t stopped finishing each others’ sentences, and we’ve already come up with a ton of ideas we’re both super proud of—ideas we can’t wait to execute together.
Cheers to that old middle school saying that we’ve both discovered is as true when you’re an adult as when you’re in middle school or high school: BFFs 4ever!
xx,
Violet & Ruby

Bubbly girls’ nite

Busy day today. Two appointments then back home to prep for champagne celebration girl-date with BFF. (Cross your fingers that I don’t trip in my new heels. They are pretty and sparkly!)

Nothing like a low-key night at a gorge Manhattan hot-spot to relieve a some stress. 🙂 Pics to come!

The Mystery of Kate Angelella

Kate and I have recently become addicted to My Little Pony snacks. This came after a long convo about how we both had MLP collections as kids. They’re just so cute and fun and pretty! Kate, however, reveal a deep dark secret! Yes, she used to bite the legs of her ponies! Totally admit–they had a certain scent that was . . . intriguing as a kid. (I, um, went through a cherry chapstick eating phase, so . . .) But it makes me heart her more!

But sooo cute! And nostalgic!

Thoughts about Eclipse

Last night, I went to see ECLIPSE with Kate and Ross. We got to the theater around 11:50ish and it was already packed. We were almost about to leave because we didn’t want to split up in the theater and three seats together were sooo not happening. Then, in a supersparkly way, three seats opened up in the front row. *freaks*

We grabbed the seats and the energy from the crowd was INTENSE. Screaming girls were all around and everyone was losing it. The majority of the midnight crowd at our theater? They were, without a doubt, Team Jacob. !!! Gotta admit, though, I was/am Team Edward, but ECLIPSE is my favorite book and it got me to a place of being torn between Jacob and Edward. It also was so well written as a possibility for a person (Bella) to be in love with two people.

The action in ECLIPSE was intense, the CGI was flawless (Edward’s sparkle was fab), and I liked Bryce Dallas Howard as Victoria. More romance and Jacob/Bella time was definitely lacking for me as were more talking/intimate moments between Edward and Bella since they were going back and forth about being engaged. This is an instance where I felt the book was better than the movie. But I still enjoyed it greatly and can’t wait for it to come out on DVD. It actually made me want to reread ECLIPSE while the movie is fresh in my brain.

I hope everyone who wanted to see it last night made it to theaters! 🙂 Major hearts to K for going out with me and R for being awesome about seeing another Twilight Saga flick.

I Tweeted pics about everything yesterday AND as if ECLIPSE coming out wasn’t enough, Barnes & Noble has released CITY SECRETS!! Yaaay for Canterwood Crest #9!

Eclipse at midnight!!! :)

Just got back from the theater where I picked up three tickets for tonight’s midnight showing of ECLIPSE. As long as the BFF is feeling up for a couple hours out, we’re planning on hitting the show. I. Am. So. Freaking. Excited.

I’ve got my light blue “Team Edward” T-Shirt and Kate’s wearing her “Team Jacob” shirt.

This is a superfun dream catcher keychain that came with my NEW MOON DVD. I offered it to Kate to match her shirt, but she just shook her head. I knew better than to ask if she’d like to use it, but I tried. 😀 Instead, I clipped it to my purse.

The theater is going to be CRAZY. It was superintense last time with guys and girls both getting into the vampires vs werewolves drama. There’s lots of action in this movie, so I’m betting the girls will be dragging their secretly not-so-reluctant boyfriend along.
,
Will take pics of the insanity if possible . . . Happy ECLIPSE release and I hope that everyone who’s going tonight has so much fun!

BFF’s book sighting at B&N

Stealing this photo from @JRAngelella’s Twitter. It’s the *first* pic of @KateAngelella’s Nancy Drew! It’s called Nancy Drew (Secret Sabotage: Book One of the Sabotage Mystery Trilogy.) I watched Carolyn Keene aka Kate write this book and it’s soo exciting to have an official pic of it out in the wild! 🙂 Yaaay! I’ve got my copy, now I just need her to autograph it . . .

PS–Check out the purple nails. Sally Hansen in HD purple. So. Pretty. K painted mine in a superfun black that I heart.

PPS–I highly encourage Team Canterwood to check it out since Editor K penned it.

xoxo and happy weekend!

:)

Just. Relieved.

A few more hurdles to go, but finally an answer today.

I feel like running around the Slope and hugging strangers.

Chillin’ on a Saturday

Well, kind of. I’m playing with a couple of outlines, thinking about new ideas, cleaning and running errands. I went to my local B&N and signed stock. Check out my Tweets on my sidebar if you want to see a pic. They only had 1 copy of BEST ENEMIES, so that was cool.

Now we must talk Twilight and New Moon. Be prepared for girly craziness. 😀

On Thursday, my theater was cool enough to show Twilight first, at 9:15 and then to show New Moon at midnight. I was freaking out all day and even only drank 1 Diet Coke so I didn’t make BFF crazy with my already hyper state. One of our convos that day:

BFF: Are you totally spazzing?

Me: YES! But I only had one Diet Coke since, you know, I want to live and you’d kill me in my hyper state.

BFF: Ohhhhhhh, greeeat. (She was half-serious.) 😉

She told me to just go to our fave place for sparkly drinks and to calm down before she got there. I tried and spent 20something minutes talking to anyone near me, including my fave BR peeps, abt the night’s awesomeness.

BFF arrived with a rose for me (again, pic on the Twitter feed) ’cause she knew tonight was a huuuuge deal for me. We talked Twilight/New Moon and eventually headed to the theater where we meet up with her boy.

Since I’d never seen Twilight on the big screen, I almost lost it when RPattz walked into the caf for the first time. It. Was. Awesome. Watching Twilight on a screen that size was like I’d never seen the movie before. I started thinking about where I was that time last year and remembered BFF had called me just before going to see Twilight at the same theater and telling me about it. Very cool that we got to see it together. Surreal.

Then…25 mins till New Moon. Everyone was ready. The theater was packed with all ages and lots of guys. (Most of whom were Team Jacob when they vocalized it in the theater.) The movie started and I thought hyperventilation might occur. But, you know, I stayed cool. Ish. 😉

The movie crowd was the best–there was cheering, sighing (longing sighs), and shout outs for Jacob or Edward.

The high points:

* Taylor Lautner (Yes, I put him first.) The kid thought he was going to lose his job after Twilight and he worked his butt off to put on 30 pounds of muscle to play werewolf Jake.

* RPattz looking as if he’d been dying without KStew during their separation.

* Alice driving the car through Italy.

* The fight sequence with the Volturi.

* Dakota Fanning killing it as Jane. Scary with the red contacts. And speaking of…

* New contacts for the vamps. Awesome.

* The special effects for the wolf transformations. I was a little worried, but they pulled it off quite well.

* The acting. Much improved.

Okay! Forcing myself to stop here. 🙂 It’s better, in a different way, than Twilight. I cannot wait for Eclipse. Where’s my countdown clock?

Happy birthday, R!

Another day of crazy. Gotta write a zillion words (or my Excel sheet will continue to tell me that I will not finish RIVAL REVENGE until July 2010 (!!!). And if I don’t pick up my laundry, the cleaners will probably keep it. I’m about to have to wear BFF’s clothes that she left here the other night.

Usually, I’m very OCD about keeping things neat and clean. But empty boxes from Fresh Direct haven’t moved since Monday morning, my sink is piled with dishes and I’m ignoring cleaning. Too focused on book.

BUT

Tonight is supersparkly because it’s RA’s birthday!!! There will be amazing food, drinks and fun–we *never* have a boring night out.

So, happy birthday, Ross! *throws confetti*
