A little expansion on Ex

I wrote a post with some details about my most recent relationship. It ended two years ago this May, but how can something really end when there’s no closure? Or, there NEVER will be closure.

Maybe I’ll find some by sharing some of my journey. I never did because I didn’t want/don’t want to villainize anyone. Break ups happen. First loves don’t work out. Life is messy.

But it’s such a H-U-G-E part of me and my life that it feels like a secret–one I don’t want to keep anymore. You guys (*waves at first, early readers*) have been reading my books since TAKE THE REINS came onto the scene in May 2009. That’s seven years! SEVEN! I was in a relationship with Ex for almost that entire time–it was this part of my life that few know about it. It’s not something I want to duck and cover from anymore. I’m living with a LOT of secrets–some that I’ve made public and others are private–and all I want is to get this off my chest. To move on.

I started seeing someone in November 2009 and was head over heels in love before I could blink. So was Ex. I’d made the move to NYC to escape some things, live in a big city, and to be closer to Ex.

Romance wasn’t something we sought out or meant to happen–it just did. I stood in the garden late one night and asked if I could kiss Ex. We were at our favorite after work bar and Ex had just gotten back to Brooklyn from another day in publishing. Ex said yes and that was that. If we had been inseparable before, we were crazy inseparable now.

I rode the F train 45 minutes almost every day to Ex’s publishing house to have lunch and we would ride home together. Sometimes to my place, sometimes to Ex’s. If we weren’t together, we were G-chatting, BlackBerry messaging or on the phone. I couldn’t see Ex enough and it was very true that at the time, Ex felt the same.

But since this is obviously a break up story, Ex’s feelings changed . . .

And, with that, I want to spill another secret: I’m fictionalizing the story for a new YA! It has been good therapy to write it and I can’t wait to share it with you. #nomoresecrets ❤

Life

I’m blogging from the most beautiful view that I’ve ever seen in Manhattan. Slept in Manhattan for the first time on Friday night. Am in a building where there are doormen, elevator men and security that won’t allow you up unless you show your key or they call the person’s apartment. There’s central air. And gorgeous plants. There’s a terrace that’s begging to have a writer sit and compose a novel.

But the apartment and all its beauty has the most important piece of it missing–Allen R. Kate’s great-uncle passed away last week. We got the call early Friday morning. Kate, battling her own illness, flew into superwoman mode and did the first thing her great-uncle would have wanted: began thinking about how to care for her grieving grandmother–Allen’s sister.

Kate and Gram (I also call her Gram because she’s adopted me in the family) have a special bond that cannot be described. They know when something’s wrong with the other even though they live six hours apart. Gram helped Kate through some of the most difficult periods of her life and has been there to share some of the biggest joys.

Kate is still in the same amount of pain, has no diagnosis–just an educated guess and is on trial medication. But it isn’t working. We’re retuning to the Mayo Clinic in September for more tests. I know I haven’t updated you all on her condition, but I was waiting to see how her body would react to the new medication. It was devastating to come home from Mayo and still not know what is wrong. We’re looking forward to going back and having even more tests run. Again, I thank you all for the support. We still talk about it and it hasn’t been forgotten.

I’m talking about Kate’s illness in relation to her great-uncle’s passing because it shows what kind of person that Kate is. She has been by her Gram’s side, holding her at night, preparing to be with her at the appointments to wrap up her great-uncle’s affairs all while not saying a word about her pain and trying to keep it from being visible on her face.

Her great-uncle was a war vet with a Purple Heart. He was a private, strong, intimidating, smart man who attended Harvard and traveled the world. He was a huge presence in Kate’s life–a man she wanted to impress with grades, work, writing, etc. Kate lived at his apartment during the first few weeks of her time at Simon & Schuster until Ross found their first apartment in Brooklyn. Yesterday, Kate found her edit test and resume that ultimately led to her becoming an editor and now a full time freelance editor, author and co-owner of Violet & Ruby.

Allen will never see Kate’s first book on the shelves, but he passed knowing his great-niece had achieved her dream.

I am in awe of Kate’s strength during this time when she is also grieving and dealing with her own medical problems. She got her strength from her grandmother.

We will probably be staying on the Upper East Side for a week or two. There’s much to be done, but we’re all working together.

So, if you haven’t said “I love you” to someone today or haven’t called a friend that you’ve been meaning to call, do it now. Don’t wait. Life can change in an instant.

Bubbly girls’ nite

Busy day today. Two appointments then back home to prep for champagne celebration girl-date with BFF. (Cross your fingers that I don’t trip in my new heels. They are pretty and sparkly!)

Nothing like a low-key night at a gorge Manhattan hot-spot to relieve a some stress. 🙂 Pics to come!

The Mystery of Kate Angelella

Kate and I have recently become addicted to My Little Pony snacks. This came after a long convo about how we both had MLP collections as kids. They’re just so cute and fun and pretty! Kate, however, reveal a deep dark secret! Yes, she used to bite the legs of her ponies! Totally admit–they had a certain scent that was . . . intriguing as a kid. (I, um, went through a cherry chapstick eating phase, so . . .) But it makes me heart her more!

But sooo cute! And nostalgic!

Yay, Friday!

Happy Friday, everyone!

What’s everyone up to this weekend? I’ll be working on the latest Canterwood book and reading. I just finished watching PRETTY LITTLE LIARS and OMG. So. Good! I’ve read every book except for the latest two and am re-reading the series with Kate. It’s really, really fun to read books with a friend and have the same !!! reactions to certain parts.

Hope you all have a superfun weekend! 🙂

TGIF!

Thoughts about Eclipse

Last night, I went to see ECLIPSE with Kate and Ross. We got to the theater around 11:50ish and it was already packed. We were almost about to leave because we didn’t want to split up in the theater and three seats together were sooo not happening. Then, in a supersparkly way, three seats opened up in the front row. *freaks*

We grabbed the seats and the energy from the crowd was INTENSE. Screaming girls were all around and everyone was losing it. The majority of the midnight crowd at our theater? They were, without a doubt, Team Jacob. !!! Gotta admit, though, I was/am Team Edward, but ECLIPSE is my favorite book and it got me to a place of being torn between Jacob and Edward. It also was so well written as a possibility for a person (Bella) to be in love with two people.

The action in ECLIPSE was intense, the CGI was flawless (Edward’s sparkle was fab), and I liked Bryce Dallas Howard as Victoria. More romance and Jacob/Bella time was definitely lacking for me as were more talking/intimate moments between Edward and Bella since they were going back and forth about being engaged. This is an instance where I felt the book was better than the movie. But I still enjoyed it greatly and can’t wait for it to come out on DVD. It actually made me want to reread ECLIPSE while the movie is fresh in my brain.

I hope everyone who wanted to see it last night made it to theaters! 🙂 Major hearts to K for going out with me and R for being awesome about seeing another Twilight Saga flick.

I Tweeted pics about everything yesterday AND as if ECLIPSE coming out wasn’t enough, Barnes & Noble has released CITY SECRETS!! Yaaay for Canterwood Crest #9!

Eclipse at midnight!!! :)

Just got back from the theater where I picked up three tickets for tonight’s midnight showing of ECLIPSE. As long as the BFF is feeling up for a couple hours out, we’re planning on hitting the show. I. Am. So. Freaking. Excited.

I’ve got my light blue “Team Edward” T-Shirt and Kate’s wearing her “Team Jacob” shirt.

This is a superfun dream catcher keychain that came with my NEW MOON DVD. I offered it to Kate to match her shirt, but she just shook her head. I knew better than to ask if she’d like to use it, but I tried. 😀 Instead, I clipped it to my purse.

The theater is going to be CRAZY. It was superintense last time with guys and girls both getting into the vampires vs werewolves drama. There’s lots of action in this movie, so I’m betting the girls will be dragging their secretly not-so-reluctant boyfriend along.
,
Will take pics of the insanity if possible . . . Happy ECLIPSE release and I hope that everyone who’s going tonight has so much fun!

I. Am. So. Ready. For. Eclipse.

Anyone else getting *ridicuously* excited about ECLIPSE? I am about to fangirl out. Seriously. It’s my fave book of the four and I’m soooo ready for the movie! I’ll be going in my Team Edward t-shirt with the BFF in her Team Jacob shirt. Yep, we’re besties who agree to disagree on teams. 🙂

Break night

(Or, a totally random post on how I’m relaxing tonight . . .)

Watching New Moon

Doing my nails in Essie’s “Bachelorette Party”

Then, reading Shadow Kissed

After that, I’ve got a list to make of things that need to be done before my Utah trip with K. Lots of things on the list. Starting with, obvi, writing. But tonight’s for taking a break.

Although . . .

I’m getting superexcited about next month’s release of City Secrets. It’s crazy to think that it’ll be my *ninth* book on shelves. It’ll definitely be time for book-stalking when CS releases.

Happy Tuesday!
