The Most Random of All

So I’ve been in my new apartment for about a week and a half. I love it! More important–Bliss, Bella and Khaleesi love it! They are total sun bunnies. I have to buy baby sunscreen for Bella because her skin is so fair. 🙂

I’ve been brainstorming, looking at Pinterest, reading magazines, etc. with ideas for how to make an awesome patio. I posted before about my “dream patio” and that’s changed a little. Especially since I am starting to get stuff piece by piece. Next paycheck I’ll be able to get more stuff.

One thing I def want? A POOL! I have to check and see if there is even a hose on either patio, but I would looove to get a kiddie pool for the summer. This one about is my dream pool at $99 from WalMart.

I definitely want to get outdoor trees. Plants too, but none that attract bees or wasps! (So scared of those!)

This no trees needed lounger on eBay is awesome! —>ImageImageThese are solar powered lights from IKEA via eBay. I have two sets and LOVE them!

ImageThe pink side table is fold-up style and super cute! I got the blue chair from eBay. Love it! The other table is going to be painted (not the glass top just the wood!), I just have to decide whether it will be yellow, pink, blue, or teal. 🙂 Those are paints I have from Home Depot.

Image I got two of these solar powered lights from Target. There are about 6 by 6 inches big.

ImageI took this shot from my bed. 🙂 The patio on the other side is the same size!

My landlord left this beautiful iron table for me to use. I put these wicker place mats on it. I would love to get an umbrella for it soon. That’s on my list.   Image

I also want to get mesh lights and drape them from my sliding glass door to the opposite side of the patio. So it would be a net of lights that hang over you when you’re on the patio.

Like these! Image They are just under $30 on eBay.

That’s my progress and my ideas as of now. They change. A lot. 😀

I am still 1/4 left unpacked. I am in a lot of pain in my elbow and back from moving. I need to save my arm for writing Unicorn Magic #4 and wear it out unpacking. So, because of that, I have “professional organizers” coming on Friday. They are going to unpack, hang up all my clothes, organize the apartment, etc. VERY excited about this! I am so Type A that the mess is making me nuts.

Oooh! I heard from my editor and she is sending copies of TAKE THE REINS from Brazil! I am so excited–I cannot wait to see those!!

What would you put on your patio if you had one? Or, what’s on your balcony?

I love getting ideas and seeing what other people have done.

One more thing: thanks to Bri, I’ve got a photo account on FOAP. Now, I’ll be able to upload my photos and have a portfolio of my work to be accessible by potential buyers. It’s so exciting! I have 9 pics up now and whenever I am taking a break, I upload another.

Hope everyone is having a good week! xoxo

It’s here! I’m officially a New Yorker!

**PLEASE NOTE** THIS POST CONTAINS ADULT LANGUAGE AND MAY NOT BE SUITABLE FOR YOUNG READERS.

So, at midnight a pretty cool thing happens: I’ll “officially” become a New Yorker. That’s what everyone around here says, anyway, that someone must live in NYC for 5 years before they can say they are a NYer.

Tomorrow, April 5, is my five year anniversary since I arrived in NYC. Jessica-Burkhart-tattoo

For back story that I don’t need to repeat, check out my essay in DEAR TEEN ME if none of what I’m saying makes any sense to you. 😀

YABC-Choice-Award-Winner-Dear-Teen-Me

*DTM was given a very cool award such as the one above

This year, for various reasons, makes me more emotional than years past. On April 5, I will be celebrating my freedom alone. Alone in a city of 8.4 million people. So many people that you either feel swallowed by them, drowned out, or like you’re the only person who has a 212 or 646 or 718 or 631 or the zillion other area codes. I find myself among the latter.

I am human–my life both past and present isn’t bubble-gum, rainbows, unicorns, glitter, pink, and kittens all of the time. I’m battling depression and anxiety and struggle with inner demons just like anyone else.

My response that I say aloud when I get paralyzed from panic or sunk under water from depression is that I HAVE to pull myself out. I borrow words from Eminem of all people. I say,

tumblr_m17jnaXneF1rovmado1_400

I say these words over and over until I believe them. Because really, if I I don’t, why should anyone else? Like my agent, publishing houses, editors, readers, friends?

A very sensitive and kind of untouchable thing happened last fall. That’s what makes part of April 5th very raw and hard to swallow.

Moving on . . .

I am so, so (how many times can I write “so”?) grateful to every single person who has touched my life in a tiny or big way since 2009. Everyone from the guys from Fresh Direct who bring me groceries, to my neighbor Frank that I can call at 4am if I don’t feel well, to my amazing, beyond words awesome best friend, Bri. B, you could have chosen Path A. But you chose me and Path B. Thank you for waking me up in the morning, Skype writing with me so I don’t feel alone, and being there 24/7. I’m sorry that I’ve beaten you so many times at Words with Friends. I’ll try to ease up a little. 😀

Freedom can come in so many different ways. For me, like I said in my essay, I was sort of like Cady Heron from MEAN GIRLS plunked into a Brooklyn apartment with two cats and two writers. (Bailey and Pacey RIP <3)IMG-20120625-00025IMG-20120716-00049IMG-20120726-00075

Bailey and Pacey passed on to give us the chance to adopt two new babies. Enter Niro and TortiBelle.IMG-20121018-00340IMG-20121112-00464IMG-20121130-00540

After settling Niro and Torti, it was time for me to build my family. I went to a shelter’s foster mom’s house at first only to see Bliss. But Bella had just arrived minutes prior to my arrival. She was super spunky and then was an immediate lap cat. So well developed for a kitten. She stole my heart and I went home with two babies in December 2012.   IMG-20121229-00700IMG-20121229-00703IMG-20121230-00723IMG-20121230-00721IMG-20121230-00719

Look how tiny!! Precious!

IMG-20121229-00714 IMG-20121229-00708         And Bliss couldn’t even walk! She had been hit by something and fractured her pelvis. The vet wanted to amputate her hind leg and tail because the dragged behind Bliss as she crawled. Instead, I rehabbed B and she walks like a normal kitty and her tail is only a little kinky. 🙂

I’m sad because the family I thought I would have for life has evaporated. I’m thankful that I have Bella, Bliss, and Khaleesi. low res 2 (640x549)(Found in streets April 2013) I couldn’t be luckier to have my West Coast family. They are everything to me!

I know it’s SOOO cliche, but the old “if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere” quote truly seems accurate.

I want answers that I may never get. I have to work every day on letting go bit by bit of the past and live in the present. I don’t want to waste my 27th year by being stuck. I have too many projects to conquer. Too many works that I want to share with all of you.

I am ready.

Bring it. I am a New Yorker, after all.

As you guys know, I love to shop. 🙂 One of my fave things to shop for?

HANDBAGS. OMG.

I am going to my pain mgt doctor tomorrow and just down the block are stores for me to go handbag crazy. So, like last month, I’ll shop for what’s in season and resell them for less on eBay!

I went to GLAMOUR to find what spring 2014 handbag trends I needed to look for.

They are:

1. Floral print clutch (eeehh, gonna skip this. Not a fan.)

2. Pastel (yes!)

3. Bucket bags (oh, yes!) Image

4. Fashionable backpacks (one step ahead of you, Glamour!)

5. Metallic clutch ❤

6. Top handle

7, Colorblock (like the first photo)

8. Printed satchel Image DYING for this $1476 satchel from Nordstrom!

9. Structured, lady like purse. Okay!

10. Sophisticated, carry all work tote. Yes, yes!

What handbags do you think are hot for spring? I’m carrying a golden Guess bag —>Image

Brooklyn outdoor shots

Image I took some pics when I was out and about this morning. This is the gate to my new building. So pretty.

Image My balconies are WAY up there above the last one that juts out. 🙂

ImageImage This green door that I passed grabbed my attention! And the rest of the gate and the concrete’s design is lovely.

I’m moving!! :)

Image ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Well, I’m movin’ on up! 🙂

These are all pix I took of my new apartment! It’s a penthouse on the fourth floor. I wanted it SO BAD because it has two balconies! And they are HUGE! One off of the kitchen and the other is off of my bedroom. One entire bedroom wall is practically a sliding glass door.

The balconies were so important because I’ll be able to work outside on the patios AND get lots of sun during the winter. The sun greatly helps my depression, so that is why I wanted this apartment.

If you look at the chart, you’ll see what the average rent is for Park Slope. Almost $2600. This apartment was listed for $2100 and I talked my landlord down to $1850. My “new” landlord is actually the same landlord I have now. I’m moving to the building next door!

Everything is new and no one has lived in it yet. I LOVE that it has a dishwasher and a washer/dryer hookup. No more laundromats!

I can’t wait to get the kitties settled in. I know they are going to love the sunlight too.

I love being on the top floor–I’m the only one–because it will be super quiet.

I will have to make cut backs to accommodate the higher rent AND the fact that I’ll have to pay for heat and hot water. That’s usually included in rent, but I get to control my thermostat in the new place. That’s actually nice.

All of those things–dishwasher, washer/dryer, controlling heat–really make it feel like MINE.

I can start moving stuff in on Weds and my lease officially starts April 1st.

Soooo excited!!!

Las Vegas book signing!

Hey, guys!

So I can come to Las Vegas, NV for a signing in August OR September. I need your help to decide! If you’re in the area or want to come to the signing, leave a comment below about which month works better for you.

It’ll be my first West Coast signing! So excited! 🙂

Unicorn Magic #3: Green with Envy cover!

Image

Hey, everyone!

I have the cover for UNICORN MAGIC #3: GREEN WITH ENVY!

It comes out on December 23, 2014 in a simultaneous printing of paperback and hardcover. I’ve never had a hardcover before so I’m very excited!

I love this cover! I think the illustrator, Victoria Ying, was spot on. I really love the purple, too!

Yaaay, unicorns!

Smoothie & HEATED

Just made an awesome smoothie for dinner!

It has:

coconut milk
OJ
frozen peaches
frozen strawberries
2 bananas
shredded coconut
vanilla yogurt

As far as dates you can expected HEATED . . . I don’t have an answer yet. Mainly because I realized that I had to reread BE and LWL to really understand what mindset Sasha is in at camp. It’s also the first time I’m writing in her POV since I wrote HOME FOR CHRISTMAS. I want to do her justice and create the best story possible!

As soon as I know, I’ll tell you! Promise! 🙂

xoxo
